Website Security Is your website secure to order from?

When buying something on the Internet, there are several things you should be sure of. Some of these concerns are listed below:

  1. Data you send is strongly encrypted.
  2. The site you're doing business with is the site you think it is.
  3. The site you're doing business with processes your credit card and address information in a safe and responsible manner.

Points 1 and 2 are taken care of by SSL (Secure Sockets Layer), the industry standard security protocol that the At Home and Outdoors site uses to communicate with secure browsers like Netscape and Internet Explorer. When communicating with a secure server like ours, these browsers encrypt the information you send in a way that is extremely difficult for anyone else to decode. (You don't have to know whether your browser supports secure transactions--if it doesn't, you won't be able to complete the checkout process.)

Binoculars What size of binocular do I need? Physical sizing of binoculars can be grouped into 3 basic catagories: compact, midsize and large. It is the diameter of the objective lenses (the end facing towards your viewing target) that determines the size. Binoculars with lenses up to 30mm fall into the compact grouping. These are small, lightweight units that are easy to carry in a backpack or purse. Some fold into very small packages that fit well on a belt pouch or into a shirt pocket. Their smaller lens design makes them less effective in low light conditions. Units with lens diameters in the 30 to 42mm size would be the midsize versions. These are reasonably light weight and offer superior performance over a wide range of uses. They offer a good balance of performance and portability. Midsize binoculars are usually carried on a neckstrap or in a case. The large frame models usually jump to lens diameters of 50mm and larger. These heavyweights offer brilliant imaging and the best low light performance. The price paid is a weight of around 2 pounds and a bulky carrying size. Which is best? Your intended use would be the deciding factor.
Binoculars What power binocular should I get? Binoculars with magnification factors of 8 to 10 provide the most useful range of applications. Most people can handhold a binocular with up to a 10 power magnification rating. Binoculars with zoom or variable power designs are usually optically inferior to fixed power designs, but do have a application for casual use.Lenses and lens coatings are also a consideration. Precision optics are not inexpensive, but viewed as a lifetime purchase, their quality can be appreciated.
Field of View, or FOV How is Field of View measured? FOV stands for Field of View, which is the side-to-side width of the area you can see through an optical device, such as a binocular or rifle scope. Commonly the Field of View is expressed as the width, measured in feet, of the viewing area you would see at 1,000 yards, although other distances are sometimes used. Field of View is a function of the magnification power, distance, and physical design of the optical unit. The Field of View is a reference comparison; a larger field of view would expose the objective lens to light from a wider angle. In theory, this would produce a brighter image. Laser rangefinder What determines the maximum range of a laser rangefinder? The maximum range that a laser rangefinder can measure is determined by the reflectivity of the target and the unit's operational sensitivity. A bright flat surface such as a building or large metal object may allow models that normally have a 400 yard range to deliver a precise measurement out to 900 yards. As manufacturers have refined the technology, making the units smaller and more sensitive, their normal operating range has increased. Less reflected energy is required and marginal reflections will still provide enough return to give a precision distance reading. Older versions and some of the less expensive models require a higher level of reflected energy to consistently register a distance.
Spotting Scope What magnification of spotting scope do I need? Scopes in the range of 15-45 power are a good choice for general game viewing at moderate ranges. The 20-60 power is very common for the user to view game at long ranges and to see smaller bullet holes in targets at the shooting range.
Numbers on Optics What do the numbers on optics mean? (such as 10x42 or 3-9x50) The first number(s) indicate the magnification. It may be a single number (if the unit has a fixed power) or a range (such as 3-9 or 6-24) will be shown if the magnification (power) is variable. The second number, usually separated by an "x", is the objective lens diameter shown in millimeters. For example, a binocular with the designation 10x42 would magnify the image by a factor of ten and would have an objective lens diameter of 42 millimeters.
Comparing optical brands How can I determine how to compare optical products between brands? Optical products, such as binoculars and rifle scopes, share common design features no matter what brand they are. There are differences that occur in raw material qualities (especially the glass used), type and quality of lens coatings, tolerances and quality control. Many of the quality differences are not readily apparent looking through a scope under indoor lighting and conditions. Metal internal parts as opposed to plastic; structural epoxy versus lesser quality adhesives; even multi-piece versus one-piece main tube construction are all durability considerations that may not be obvious at first glance. Rifle scopes and binoculars require skilled craftsmen to align lenses during construction, so labor costs are another factor in the final production equation. Even top quality optics can fail, making warranty service another consideration.
Laser Rangefinders Laser rangefinders refer to a reflective target. What does this mean? Laser rangefinders bounce an energy beam off a target to determine distance. How much energy is returned is determined by the reflectivity of the target. A hard, flat surface will reflect more of the energy back to the laser receiver, and will give a definite precision measurement at maximum distance. Curved surfaces or those with a rough texture will reflect less energy back to the receiver, and may not give as definite a reading at longer distances. Rangefinders classify readings into two types: precision which is usually +/- one yard; and a non-precision reading which would be +/- three yards. As less energy is returned, due to distance or the reflectiveness of the target, the rangefinders' capability to determine distance is reduced. An animal target could be both reflective and non-reflective, depending upon color, fur texture and angle. A deer quartering away may not give as strong an energy return as one standing broadside to the viewer. In either case, the white rump might give a better response. A tree or rock close by could prove to be a more precise target than the animal itself. Click here to see our selection of rangefinders.

Spinning Reel What is a spinning reel?

A spinning reel spool is stationary, with the rotor/line guide revolving or spinning around it. Spinning reels are designed to mount below the rod. In use, the rod is held in the right hand and the handle is turned by the left hand (this would be a normal right-handed setup). Spinning reels usually have handles that can be moved from the right to left side as preferred. The spinning reel can handle line weights as low as 2 pound test, and can cast very light lures, when matched with the proper rod.

Rods for use with spinning reels have reel seats on the bottom of the handle, and have the line guides mounted on the bottom of the rod blank. The line is suspended below the rod by these guides, which are usually fairly large close to the reel, tapering to smaller sizes towards the tip.

Casting reel What is a baitcasting reel? A baitcasting reel is mounted on the top of the fishing rod. The axle of the spool turns at a right angle to the rod, feeding line to the rod. This type of reel normally usually works best with lines of 8 pound test or larger, although there are lightweight reels that may go down to as low as 4 pound test. Larger versions can take the heaviest line weights. The most common configuration has the handle on the right side of the reel, so the handle is turned by the right hand. This would be a right hand model designation. The turning spool is controlled by thumb pressure against the line on the spool.
Fishing Line Size How do I determine what size of fishing line to use?

Try to match the rod capabilities with a reel of appropriate size carrying enough line of sufficient strength to handle the expected fish size. Lighter line weight will usually give better lure performance and casting distance, but would not be the best choice for use around heavy cover. Fishing rods are designed to work best within a certain range of line weights, for example a medium-light rod might show a recommended line weight of 4 to 10 pounds. This information is normally indicated near the handle of the rod, along with suggested lure weights. In this example, 4 pound test line would probably give the longest casting capability, but might not be strong enough for heavy fish. The rod in this example could also handle line with up to a 10 pound test rating, but the larger diameter of this line would reduce casting distance and might not work well with light lures. Reels have capacity indicators, typically shown on the spool. Trying to put small diameter lines on larger reels can lead to problems with the line getting tangled inside the reel. Putting heavy line on a reel designed for light line might mean the spool diameter is too small for heavier lines, due to their increased diameter. The small spool would not hold much line and would probably cause excessive memory looping of the line because of the increased stiffness.
