What Makes Capodimonte Porcelain So Special?
Capodimonte is as much an art form as it is porcelain. For over 200 years, it has been fashioned into both useful objects and objects d'arte, and these pieces bring beauty and incredible craftsmanship into our homes.
Capodimonte porcelain is the finest grade of Italian artistic pottery and one of the most appreciated porcelain styles in the world for its craftsmanship, high quality and attention to detail. The manufacturing and decoration of each piece involves firing in a special kiln at very high temperatures, and many hours of handcrafting and handpainting by the artist. The result is a visually brilliant piece with exquisite color, detail and texture. The pieces make wonderfully beautiful gifts for nearly any occasion.
The name Capodimonte (meaning "top of the hill") is mainly associated with the city of Naples, and in particular to the kingdom of Charles III of Bourbon. It was Charles the III who in 1743 had a factory built on the hill near the royal palace to produce porcelain that could compete with the best European factories. He gave that factory the name Capodimonte. The pieces produced there were first identified with the Bourbon lily, and then, under Ferdinand IV, with the famous "crowned N". Production at this factory ended near 1820. Only some of the models and molds have survived from that time, and were acquired by Doccia (now Richard-Ginori). The area surrounding Naples was mainly responsible for the delicate flower (or fiori) production between the two World Wars, while Capodimonte figure sculpture moved forward rapidly in and around Milan and Veneto. Many new sculptors appeared in the fifties, such as Cappe, Fabris, Borsato, and Scapinello. The sculptures they created were inspired from everyday events as well as historical and religious scenes. Today, gifted artisans continue to advance the art and create new and breathtakingly beautiful pieces. It is the make, signature, and design of a piece that make it valuable. In addition, if the piece is of a Limited Edition, it may be numbered as well. Quality, design originality, attention to detail, and the level of craftsmanship are what make the piece unique and give the artist reknown.
